The Song {behind the music}
Soon after I finished my time with Rocketown Records, I began writing this song. While living in New York City the next year, I came up with the second verse. During the following year, as I walked with my mom through cancer treatment, I completed the final sections of the song.
I couldn’t begin to explain the vast inspiration behind this song’s lyrics, except to say that during the past five years, two things have become very obvious to me. I must embrace the gift of music that God has given me. And in order to embrace that gift, I must listen to His voice each step of the way.
The Song| Words and music by Ginny Owens
Or how long I’ll be away,
Cause if you ask me where I’m going,
Don’t know what I’m gonna say—
Life’s an ever-changing landscape,
With hues of brown and gold and green,
But every morning I awake
To the same dull desert scene.
So I’m leaving,
Leaving my old neighborhood,
I’m headed for a foreign land,
And if you’re wondering why I would—
Chorus:
I’m following the Song,
It’s calling me to come along,
To the places I have never gone,
I’m following the Song.
Verse 2:
I’m off to chase the rainbows,
And dance beneath the stars,
I’ll learn to fight courageously
For the things that move my heart-
‘cause no matter where it leads me,
It never leads me wrong;
How empty would my soul be
If I’d never heard the song.
And in those moments
When the darkness closes in
I will be still and wait
Till the music comes again-
Chorus 2:
I’ll listen for the song
Hear it when I’m all alone,
It will lead me safely home-
Oh the song.
Verse 3:
So won’t you listen,
Can’t you hear that brilliant melody?
Oh And you will hear it louder when
When you let it set you free—
Chorus 3:
Listen for the Song,
Hear it calling out your name,
Your life will never be the same
When you’re following the Song.
Oh, the Song!
Calls to you from deep within
You’ll never know a truer friend-
Keep following the song.
Mystery of Grace {behind the music}
* Don’t forget that at the bottom of the post, I’ll post the preview of this song
Grace is one of God’s most wonderful and most mysterious gifts. The more I receive it, the more I realize my desperate need for it. And the more I cling to it, the more I’m eager to give it away to others. I wrote this song from the perspective of one who has experienced grace speaking to a friend or loved one who is in need of it.
One of the greatest lies we tend to believe is that we are unimportant and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But grace changes that. It consumes us, replacing our feelings of doubt and insignificance with purpose and hope.
Mystery of Grace {words and music by Ginny Owens}
Verse 1:
I’m here to dream for you
Dreams you cannot dream yourself;
I’m here to fight for you
And heed your every cry for help;
‘cause I believe in you,
And everything that you could be;
You’re hiding from the truth,
But now it’s time for truth to set you free—
Chorus:
You are loved; you are precious;
You are special in so many ways,
You will find joy that fills you,
Just give into the mystery of grace.
Verse 2:
You think no one can see
The tears that hide behind your eyes;
You think no one can hear
The thoughts and fears that fill your mind;
I don’t know everything
Everything there is to know
But my heart breaks with your pain
And I am here to help you let it go-
Bridge:
Grace replaces who you are with who you can become,
Grace brings hope into the heart where there is none,
And when you find beauty in giving your life away,
Then you’ve tasted of the mystery of grace—

Lay It Down {behind the music}
* Don’t forget that at the bottom of the post, I’ll post the preview of this song
Perhaps this is one of the simplest of truths, but I can’t seem to remember it well. Not only that, but I often hear stories from others who, like me, forget to lay their cares at the foot of the Cross. The more we can be free from the things that weigh us down and make life heavy, the more we can be enslaved to a life of joy and freedom.
Lay It Down: Words and music by Ginny Owens
Verse 1:
“You don’t know what I’ve been through,”
She said to me
“Oh I carry the weight of empty promises and broken dreams
And I can’t climb out of this black hole where I live
Oh, I’m trapped in the darkness of the things I can’t forgive.”
You’re holding on tight to the pain that haunts you
But in the end, letting go is all that you can do-
Chorus:
Lay it down,
Everyone’s got a burden;
That’s just part of livin,
So take the one you’re given
And lay it down;
Don’t let it define you,
You’re not strong enough to
Carry that around-
Go ahead and lay it down.
Verse 2:
“Father, Father,” He cried out on His knees,
“If the weight of the whole world truly rests on Me,
And I’m the only one who can set the captives free-
Then I’ll carry this Cross to my death,
Lord, let it be.”
I’m holding on tight to the heart of that truth
He took my broken life
So what else can I do-

Daughter of Destiny {behind the music}
* Don’t forget that at the bottom of the post, I’ll post the preview of this song
I was presented with the tall order of teaching a group of at-risk middle school girls how to write a song, and I only had five
minutes to do it. So I wrote this simple chorus, hoping that I could “guide” them to come up with these lyrics. Before I had a
chance to attempt this writing activity with them, my young friend Ronell shared with me a poem she’d written entitled “Woman of Destiny.” Several months later, after losing Ronell to cancer, I changed the last line of my chorus to reflect the title of her poem.
No matter who we are, our lives have infinitely more purpose when we know who we are and where we’re going. When we believe the truth of who God says we are and allow Him to guide our steps, our destiny is certain.
Daughter of Destiny
Words and music by Ginny OwensI am,
I am beautiful,
I’m exceptional,
and powerful,
‘cause Love (God) lives
Inside of me
Calling me to be
a daughter of destiny.
People tell me every day,
What to believe, how to behave,
Oh how I wish they’d understand,
I know who, who I am—
The winds of change
May blow me round
But never will
They knock me down-
Cause when my faith
Can’t fight the fear,
God calls my name,
And I remember—
As I make my way along this journey,
Wisdom and truth will walk beside me,
I’ve been given purpose and direction,
Oh I am master-minded by the Author of perfection
