The Song {behind the music}

Soon after I finished my time with Rocketown Records, I began writing this song. While living in New York City the next year, I came up with the second verse. During the following year, as I walked with my mom through cancer treatment, I completed the final sections of the song.

I couldn’t begin to explain the vast inspiration behind this song’s lyrics, except to say that during the past five years, two things have become very obvious to me. I must embrace the gift of music that God has given me. And in order to embrace that gift, I must listen to His voice each step of the way.

The SongWords and music by Ginny Owens

Don’t ask me where I’m going,

Or how long I’ll be away,

Cause if you ask me where I’m going,

Don’t know what I’m gonna say—

Life’s an ever-changing landscape,

With hues  of brown and gold and green,

But every  morning I awake

To the same dull desert scene.

So I’m leaving,

Leaving my old neighborhood,

I’m headed for a foreign land,

And if you’re wondering why I would—

Chorus:

I’m following the Song,

It’s calling me to come along,

To the places I have never gone,

I’m following the Song.

Verse 2:

I’m off to chase the rainbows,

And dance beneath the stars,

I’ll learn to fight courageously

For the things that move my heart-

‘cause no matter where it leads me,

It never leads me wrong;

How empty would my soul be

If I’d never heard the song.

And in those moments

When the darkness closes in

I will be still and wait

Till the music comes again-

Chorus 2:

I’ll listen for the song

Hear it when I’m all alone,

It will lead me safely home-

Oh the song.

Verse 3:

So won’t you listen,

Can’t you hear that brilliant melody?

Oh And you will hear it louder when

When you let it set you free—

 Chorus 3:

Listen for the Song,

Hear it calling out your name,

Your life will never be the same

When you’re following the Song.

Oh, the Song!

Calls to you from deep within

You’ll never know a truer friend-

Keep following the song.

I remember the first time I heard you sing “The Song” at the Cup O Joy. I thought it was a good song and I was curious how it would sound if you put it on a album. It was not until your live preview show did it strike me how beautiful a song it is. It is now my favorite song on your Get In I’m Driving album.

Ginny, I love this song. I just lost my mom to cancer in August. She was a wonderful woman of God who taught me to love, laugh, cry, and most of all to follow the my Lord. Her battle was a short 8 months but she followed the song the entire time. This song reminds me of her and her fight for the Lord. Thank you for allowing the Lord to use your talents for him. Your songs help me keep my focus on Christ and the fact that this is not our home and one day we will all be together.

i was working on a christian mission when my dad died and somebody gave me without condition, Ginny the fact that those words addressed my pain made me come close to the spirit of the trinity, the fact that i find out your blind not only humbles me but gives me grace, grace i need to battle nature, people come and go and enemies mount but grace is the key

i have lost to pastors i have loved to move on

i am grieving and happy at the same time

    thanks
